During a regular hygiene appointment, our skilled dental hygienist will professionally clean your teeth of plaque, calculus (hardened plaque or ‘tartar’), and eliminate any outside surface staining. Your gums will be assessed for periodontitis (gum disease) or gingivitis and your entire oral cavity checked for any irregularities such as oral cancer.
As per our preventative philosophy, our dental hygienist will work with you to demonstrate how you should clean your teeth to attain the best possible results. They may recommend any dental products that they believe will assist you in achieving total dental fitness, including dietary advice or even lifestyle changes.
A thorough check up of your teeth and any existing restorations is conducted routinely (usually every six months). This couples your hygiene appointment and a periodic examination with the goal of identifying any issues before they become major problems. Proper diagnosis may involve the use of radiographs.
Should a problem be detected, the use of dental instruments is not necessarily required. The solution may be as simple as the use of professional recommended dental products to control very early decay or areas that are at risk of decay, or the change in your daily oral care routine.
“Educating patients on the effects of gum disease and then assisting them to develop excellent skills to maintain a state of oral health is a rewarding and satisfying role as a Dental Hygienist. My patients look forward to their hygiene appointment knowing that regular maintenance makes their mouths not only look but feel great too.”
