Custom Mouthguards

High-impact sports can place teeth at risk of injury without appropriate protection. Custom-fitted mouthguards are available for eligible patients following assessment and may help protect teeth during sporting activities.

What are custom mouthguards?

A custom mouthguard is a protective appliance made to fit over the teeth and is individually designed following dental assessment.

Custom mouthguards are commonly worn during contact or high-impact sports to help reduce the risk of dental injury. In some cases, different types of dental appliances may also be used for conditions such as teeth grinding or jaw-related concerns, where appropriate.

Certain dental appliances may form part of the management of snoring or sleep-related conditions following assessment and, where required, referral or collaboration with other health professionals.

A custom-fitted sports mouthguard may help to:

  • Cushion the teeth against impact during contact or high-impact sports
  • Reduce the risk of injury to the teeth and surrounding oral tissues
  • Help protect the lips, cheeks, and gums from soft tissue injury
  • Improve comfort and retention compared to over-the-counter mouthguards

Mouthguards are designed to help reduce the risk of dental injury but do not eliminate the risk of injury during sporting activities.

Custom mouthguards are individually made following dental assessment to improve comfort, fit, and retention during use. They are suitable for both adults and children involved in contact sports.

Bonnells Bay Dental supports the local sporting community by providing custom-fitted sports mouthguards. Mouthguards can be made in a range of colours, including club colours, where available.

Caring for your custom mouthguard

To care for your mouthguard, rinse it before and after use or clean it with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste, then allow it to air-dry. Periodically, it can be cleaned using cool, soapy water and rinsed thoroughly.

When not in use, store your mouthguard in a ventilated container and keep it in a cool place. Avoid leaving it in hot environments, such as a car, as heat may affect its shape. Check regularly for signs of wear, which may indicate the need for replacement.
