Sedation Options May Include
- Nitrous oxide sedation
- Oral sedation
- Intravenous (IV) sedation
Not all patients are suitable for all forms of sedation. Your dental practitioner will discuss available options based on your medical history and the planned procedure.
When Might Sedation Be Considered?
Sedation may be considered for patients who:
- Experience dental anxiety
- Are undergoing lengthy or complex procedures
- Have difficulty tolerating dental treatment
An assessment is required to determine suitability.
What is Intravenous (IV) Sedation?
IV sedation involves the administration of sedative medication through a vein to promote relaxation during treatment. Patients remain responsive but may feel drowsy.
Some patients report limited memory of the procedure; however, individual responses vary.
Sedation is administered and monitored by appropriately trained practitioners. Vital signs, including blood pressure and oxygen levels, are monitored throughout the procedure.
Local anaesthetic is still required to manage discomfort during dental treatment.
Pre & Post Care for Dental Sedation
Fasting instructions and medication guidance will be provided prior to your appointment where relevant.
Recovery time varies between individuals. Patients may feel drowsy following sedation and should arrange for a responsible adult to accompany them home. Driving or operating machinery is not recommended for the remainder of the day.
